SHALGAM MATAR BHURTA


Shalgam (turnip)is a winter vegetable. By the way, very few people like to eat shalgam, but eating shalgam is very beneficial for health, especially for arthritis because it contains lot of calcium. Shalgam are made in many ways like: shalgam aaloo curry, pickle of shalgam, shalgam soup, shalgam matar  bhurta. Here i am telling you to make shalgam matar bhurta (turnip, peas bhurta). It is made by adding some sugar or jaggery. Khatta meetha bhurta are very tasty to eat with simple phulka, bajra roti. Shalgam ,matar bhurta (turnip, peas bhurta ) are delicious to eat and are easy to make it.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 500 gram---Shalgam (Turnip)
  • 1 cup---Matar (Peas)
  • 4--- Tomatoes (chopped)
  • 2--- Green chili (chopped)
  • 1/2 inch--- Ginger (grated)
  • 3 tsp---Oil
  • 1 tsp--- Jeera (Cumin seeds)
  • 1 tsp---Lal mirch powder (Red chili powder)
  • 1/2 tsp---Haldi (Turmeric)
  • 2 tsp---Sugar / Jaggery
  • 1 tsp--- Lemon juice
  • According to taste--- Salt
  • Some fresh coriander leaves.

METHOD:

  • Peel the shalgam (turnip) and cut into pieces.
  • Pour 4 cups of cups of water into the pressure cooker and boil the shalgam until the 3-whistle come in the cooker.
  • Open the cooker when cools it, take out the shalgam from the cooker.
  • Mash the shalgam and boil the matar (peas) in water for 2 minutes.
  • Heat 3 tsp oil in a pan, put cumin seeds.
  • Add grated ginger and chopped green chili when the cumin seeds crackle.
  • Put chopped tomatoes.
  • Cook the tomatoes until it becomes very soft.
  • Put mashed shalgam and boiled peas, cook it for 2 minutes.
  • Put salt, red chili powder, turmeric powder, mix it properly.
  • Cook it for 7 minutes.
  • Put sugar and cook it for 3 minutes, keep stirring the turnip occasionally.
  • Put lemon juice and mix it properly.
  • Switch off the flame.
  • Khatta meetha shalgam bhurta is ready to serve, you can enjoy it with simple phulka,missi roti, bajra roti.

TIPS:

  • If you prefer sweeter, you can increase the qty of sugar.
  • Jaggery can also be used in place of sugar in shalgam matar bhurta
